North Korea in 1995: the crucible of "our style socialism."(A Survey of Asia in 1995: Part I)
Article Abstract:
North Korea tries to show the international community that it remains communist despite major changes in world affairs. However, when it sought aid from other countries in 1995, the inherent flaws of the North Korean-style of communism became more apparent. Foreign policy in 1995 was also characterized by selective international engagement and isolation at times. The country has yet to legitimize Kim Jong Il's leadership.

North Korea in 2005: Maximizing profit to save socialism
Article Abstract:
The most important changes that relate to North Korea in 2005 were the great strides in the inter-Korean relationship and the economic 'reform' since 2002. This grafts 'profit maximization' to the heart of what is arguably the most rigid planned economy the world has ever known.
