Not written in stone: Ming readers of the Great Learning and the impact of forgery
Article Abstract:
The importance in the Ming dynasty of the forged Shijing daxue (Stone Classics Great Learning), purported to be the most reliable version of the Great Learning, a guide to students and scholars alike, is examined. The publisher, the forger, and subsequent readers all used the forgery toward their own ends and it is shown that forgery did more to destabilize than to unify readings of the Great Learning.

Article Abstract:
The century- long process leading to the enshrinement of the first Ming Confucian Xue Xuan (1389-1464) in the Temple to Confucius during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) is analyzed. Xue supporters secured Xue's place in the Temple by refining their rhetoric and continuing to promote his teachings, and also using the new criteria that were considered for evaluating Confucians.
