Patterns of activity and use of time in rural Bangladesh: class, gender, and seasonal variations
Article Abstract:
The labor market in a typical rural location in Bangladesh is studied with respect to the importance of female labor in the agricultural and household economy and the allocation of work by gender, social class and temporal variation. Results show that women's contribution is not properly acknowledged and, thus, economic statistics do not accurately reflect reality. This distortion or underrepresentation arises because women usually engage in non-income generating, but nevertheless, valuable activities such as raising poultry and firewood collecting.

Redistributive land and tenancy reform in Bangladesh agriculture
Article Abstract:
Land reform has tended to be undertaken for political reasons in order to gain support for a new government, but has not resulted in the creation of an independent and prosperous peasant class, and it is not the best option for Bangladesh. If land reform were carried out, it would undermine the rural elite, and create a peasantry which was dependent on the state, with increased bureaucracy. The urban elite would end up being the real beneficiaries. Bangladesh has serious problems and should focus on solutions which would bring higher returns.
