Rereading the 1890s: venereal disease as "constitutional crisis" in Britain and British India
Article Abstract:
Measures aimed at minimizing military venereal disease and regulating prostitution during 1890s generated serious dissension among policy makers in India and England, triggering a constitutional crisis. Although the Contagious Diseases Acts was repealed in Britain long before 1890s, it was retained in colonial India. The Indian Contagious Diseases Act and the Cantonment Act was passed after a series of confrontation between politicians at home and those in charge of the colony. This sexual politics aimed to strengthen a colonial power based on whiteness, European-ness and maleness.

Sati worship and Marwari public identity in India
Article Abstract:
The practice of worshipping sati in India was made illegal in 1987 and the legal debate over sati worship is examined in the context of the cultural politics of Calcutta Marwaris, a business community that has been a vehement defender of sati worship. They claim that sati worship is a necessary part of their religion, tradition and cultural identity, and has nothing to do with actual widow sacrifice.
