Rubies and coral: the lapidary crafting of language in Kerala
Article Abstract:
The Lilatilakam's discussion of Manipravlam cab ne interpreted as a preliminary text about Malayalam, Kerala's language. The self-awareness of this text makes it an interesting example of linguistic theory. Lilatilakam does not refer to Malayalam, as the language had not yet originated. However, it does lay out the poetics and grammar which are currently found in Malayalam.

The cosmopolitan vernacular
Article Abstract:
The formation of the vernacular Kannada literary tradition against the context of a Sanskrit cosmopolis addresses some of the issues of vernacularization of the late medieval period. The way the vernacular and the cosmopolitan interact and form each other, and the links between the linguistic, cultural and political facets of society are analyzed.

Cultural ideologies of language in precolonial India: a symposium
Article Abstract:
Language and linguistic development have played a key role in the socio-cultural identity of several South Asian communities. Scholars have taken different approaches in exploring this phenomenon. They have studied the particulars of one language and one region or they have tried to understand the global implications of languages like Sanskrit.
