Song dynasty local gazetteers and their place in the history of difangzhi writing
Article Abstract:
Ancient local Chinese histories, or difangzhi, developed characteristics in the Song dynasty which influenced the work of later gazetteers. The Northern Song dynasty's local histories, written largely in the late tenth and early eleventh centuries, focused on maps and treatises, or tujing, which had military, political, and administrative uses. The Southern Song dynasty of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries increased difangzhi production and emphasized text which provided ideal behavior.
