Still relevant: Claude Ake's challenge to mainstream discourse on African politics and development
Article Abstract:
Claude Ake developed a critical consciousness on the condition of Africa and Africans, a consciousness which was very much informed by his contemporaries who may be located within a radical tradition. His last work was a critical analysis of globalization, which he equated with hegemonization, locating the process of increased integration as western values being diffused throughout the world.

Article Abstract:
For Africa to achieve development it must pursue its interests, independent of the forces of globalization, which have only succeeded in worsening Africa's structural dependency and marginal status in the world system. Progress in Africa must start with the dismantling of structures inherited from colonialism, all of which have remained important obstacles to economic growth and development.
