The Osaka Kannon Pilgrimage and Chikamatsu's: Love studies at Sonezki
Article Abstract:
Examining the opening passage of Sonezaki shinju (Love suicides at Sonezaki, 1703), Chikamatsu Monsaemon's first contemporary-life play for the puppet theater (joruri), issues related to the development of and historical context for joruri are explored. Ohatsu, the heroine's pilgrimage, commonly referred to as the Kannon-meguri is discussed and how the Kannon-mejuri in Chikamatsu's play was performed thus revealing the importance of the passage for the understanding the play as a whole.

Thicker than blood: The social and political significance of wet nurses in Japan, 950-1330
Article Abstract:
A study of wet nurses is explored by highlighting the transformation of an informal role into an established institution that affected the politics from 950 to 1330. After 1230, the court institutionalized the office of wet nurse, thus replacing the personal wet-nurse bond by formal and impersonal ties.
