The secularization of religious ethnography and narrative competence in a discourse of faith
Article Abstract:
A process of secularization of religious ethnography, of excluding belief from the research, has occurred in response to the problem of imposing beliefs on one's field of study. One form of secularization has been to study narrative competence as a way of focusing on structure rather than on the underlying beliefs. A case study involving fieldwork in an independent, mystical church demonstrates the difference between external and internal evaluations of the narration of religious experience. A verbal performance that seems quite fluent and competent to the outsider is judged according to different criteria by members of the church.

Worldview in folk narrative: an addendum
Article Abstract:
Worldview in folklore is treated in two ways. The older idea of worldview sees it as synonymous with cosmology, while the more modern idea is more structural and cognitive. Thus the older view could provide data from which to formulate ideas on the newer worldview. Moreover, worldview explained as cosmology is a conscious idea, whereas the more cognitive worldview is unconscious.
