The Poorhouse
Article Abstract:
From Elizabethan times the relief of the poor in England was a parish responsibility and various laws were enacted to cover assistance of the needy in the community, sometimes in specially built poorhouses. In 1834 legislation combined parishes in "unions" that all built poorhouses to accommodate sick, mentally ill, elderly, destitute and so-called indolent in separate accommodation. The social welfare system in North America followed a similar model, beginning in colonial times. In the post-Civil War period social welfare laws led to the establishment of separate facilities for the elderly and the mentally ill. Benevolent societies also played a role.
