The "Tale of Gamelyn" as a Greenwood outlaw talking
Article Abstract:
The medieval "Tale of Gamelyn" developed from oral performance or 'talking' and like the story of Robin Hood gained popularity as one of the legends of greenwood outlaws who champion the poor and oppressed. Research indicates that geographic locations, proverbs, and songs which appeared in later written interpretations of Robin Hood also appear in early oral performances of Gamelyn. Both Gamelyn and the stories of Robin Hood are part of a distinct tradition of outlaw hero ballads which flourished long before the advent of written tales.

Beowulf, old law, internalized feud
Article Abstract:
Study of "Beowulf" as an example of traditional folklore and reflection of medieval society can be problematic because of Beowulf's non-traditional behavior and unique position in literary history. Though other characters within the Beowulf epic appear in other legends, the character of Beowulf exists only in his own story. Folkloric interpretations of the tale can be combined with other academic readings to make cultural conclusions about the Anglo-Saxon audience for which the work was intended.

Legends of Breca and Beowulf
Article Abstract:
The passage in "Beowulf" concerning a rowing contest between Beowulf and Breca reflects elements of Germanic oral folk history. The rowing contest passage is particularly interesting because of the traditional oral narrative found in the structure of the tale and representation of the characters. A folkloric reading of the legend can offer insights into medieval history, sociology, and literature.
