The case for computer-mediated reading: 'Une vie de Boy.'
Article Abstract:
Teaching French with 'Une vie de Boy' on the computer is evaluated. One advantage of an interactive reading program is it tells teachers which types of glosses students use to better understand their reading. The computer program was studied to evaluate its efficacy in teaching foreign-language vocabulary and students using it did better on a delayed vocabulary recall test than a controlled group using printed vocabulary glosses. As expected, the gloss giving English explanations of the unknown French words was the most popular. Other glosses available were cultural notes and 'relations' categories.
