Issues concerning the influences on Japanese industrial management in the early 20th century, before World War II, are examined, focusing on how writer and management consultant Ueno Yoichi incorporated the ideas of Frederick Winslow Taylor regarding industrial efficiency. Topics include biographical information on Ueno Yoichi, the Japanese concept of efficiency, and a challenge to the idea that Scientific Management failed to influence prewar Japan.

This article examines the actions of Inoue Nissho's political assassination of former Finance Minister Inoue Junnosuke and the Director-General of Mitsui Dan Takuma. The author maintains Nissho, driven by religious fanaticism, was acquitted of his crimes because he was able to justify his terrorist activities in that he committed them in the name of nationalism.

The Japanese police's claim to efficiency: a critical view
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of Japan's police force must be examined in the context of the mechanisms that drive Japanese society, particularly the sense of community in the country. The heavy reliance of Japanese police on satellite police boxes, together with foot patrols, are the major differences between that country's police operation and that of the US.
