The commemorative character of Thai historiography: The 1942-43 Thai military campaign in the Shan States depicted as a story of national salvation and the restoration of Thai independence
Article Abstract:
Thais are known to publish books commemorating events and personages that can be a valuable source of knowledge for students of modern Thai history, but the books are filled with self-praise, and any undesirable or embarrassing historical facts are ignored completely. Thai Military History in the Greater East Asia War published in 1997 is one such example where during the World War II the history of Thai military is forced into a preconceived notion of a national salvation story and the restoration of Thai independence.

Single powerful leaders, population adaptability, food resources, and effective bureaucratic structure are the factors affecting the long-term success of military incursion.

The South China Sea in the age of European decline
Article Abstract:
The economic and strategic importance of the two island groups, Paracel and Spartly Islands, as evaluated by the French and British authorities during the period 1930-56 is discussed. It was found that both the islands were of little value and that the French and British were interested in possession of the island as it helped in controlling the South China Sea rather than occupying it.
