"The common humanity that is in us all": toward racial reconciliation in Gaines's 'A Lesson Before Dying'
Article Abstract:
Ernest J. Gaines's 'A Lesson Before Dying' (1993) contains a school teacher Grant Wiggins who visits Jefferson, a former student who is awaiting executive for a crime he did not commit, and questions him as to what a myth is, to which he goes on to state that a myth is an old lie people believe in, European Americans believing that they are better than anyone else on earth, and that is a myth. A detailed justification is presented on the above script.
