The eighteenth century empire: the London dissenters' lobbies and the American colonies

Article Abstract:

The English religious dissenters' lobbying in behalf of their American colonial counterparts counterparts provides one example of how such pro-American lobbying groups held and then lost influence on British colonial policy from the mid-1730s to the early 1760s. The English dissenters, made up of Congregationalists, Presbyterians and Baptists, worked effectively to defend their American co-religionists' interests in such issues as patronage. However, the British government's instability after 1754 and divisions within the dissenters deprived the Americans of this source of political influence.

State of the art: adding empire to the study of American culture

Article Abstract:

There is an observable dearth in the treatment of postcolonial conditions in much of the literature produced by Americans. In contrast, writers dealing with colonialism and its aftermath, which is postcolonialism, usually refer to Anglo-Saxon experiences in Asia such as India and Africa. It is therefore suggested that writers on American culture incorporate the issue in their works so as to enrich that culture with new insights on geography and history.

The new Roman empire: European envisionings and American premillennialists

Article Abstract:

American understanding of Europe is discussed in terms of the influence of religion. It is suggested that American conservative, premillenial Protestants are influenced in their views of Europe by biblical predictions of the revival of the Roman empire.
