The "m" word: the 1994 Archer Taylor Memorial Lecture
Article Abstract:
California offers an ideal laboratory for examining multiculturalism since 44% of the population was born outside the US and many speak a foreign language at home. The interaction between the mainstream and foreign cultures will be more positive if members of the former are more knowledgeable about the foreign culture. Foreign traditions will decline if the mainstream group is offended or is hostile to such traditions. A Los Angeles Times column on the city's ethnic communities is described.

Curiously familiar: art and curio stores in Los Angeles' Chinatown
Article Abstract:
The original Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, razed in the 1940s, has regrown into New Chinatown with many merchants continuing the tradition of displaying curios and art objects. Many contemporary Chinese Americans continue to represent their past through objects that are self-consciously foreign, exotic, and old.
