The poetics of politics and the politics of poetics: Richard Beer-Hofmann and Theodor Herzl reconsidered
Article Abstract:
Richard Beer-Hofmann's poetry is often interpreted as opposing Theodor Herzl's Zionist writings. Careful analysis reveals Beer-Hofmann's cultural conception of Judaism has effects far beyond Viennese concerns. Beer-Hofmann accommodated Herzl's political goals, although he had no desire to live in Palestine. Herzl was not only dedicated to establishing a Jewish state, but viewed that process as a means to emancipate all humanity.
