The politics of the forest in colonial Malaya
Article Abstract:
Forest ecology and related politics during colonial times played a strong role in shaping the relationship of indigenous Malay people, known as the Orang Asli, to their environment. Colonial British authorities sought control over forest resources and subsequently the inhabiting Orang Asli. Colonialists' claims of ecological destruction by the Orang Asli were mainly an attempt to control the indigenous people and take away their independence. Politics and the Orang Asli's position within the forest defines their lives and future in the present as well.
