The rise of the rural network politician: will Thailand's new elite endure?

Article Abstract:

The rise of the rural network politicians in Thailand is attributed to the gradual shift in sources of power from bureaucracy to money. Money has become the ultimate source of power and status since 1973. Following the overthrow of the Thanom military government, the political parties depended on rural support and provincial businessmen came to power. Unlike the government, the rural politician networks include the population as a whole and are gaining in popular support. It is believed that even the monarchy will be unable to stem the rise of rural network politicians in Thailand.

The international media and the domestic political coverage of the Thai press

Article Abstract:

This article examines the Thai press coverage of political events, arguing that electronic media are largely controlled by the state but newspapers retain a significant element of independence. There is little influence from western media as well, since Thai papers often devote most coverage to local events.
