The role of power struggle and economic changes in the 'Heshang phenomenon' in China
Article Abstract:
A Chinese television series called Heshang that promotes Westernization while criticizing nationalism and traditional Chinese culture is an example of the modernization changes and economic reform taking place in China. Heshang sends the message that tradition and modernity are incompatible. The series was aired through the CCTV, the Party's official propaganda, which may indicate a rift in the Party or a lessening of Party control over the media. The resulting Heshang phenomenon illustrates how marketization can assist in developing a public sphere or civil society.

APEC: the challenges of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
Article Abstract:
The 'Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation' (APEC) since its origin in 1989 has focused on developing inter-governmental discussion and increasing economic cooperation. The geographical boundaries of APEC have been a subject of controversy. Three priority areas have been marked by the APEC agenda. The economic recession across the world in the 1990s has not significantly affected the momentum of economic growth in Southeast and East Asia. All through the 1980s, the economies of these countries grew at a rate twice that of other economies in the world.

Tax remission and tax burden in rural lower Burma during the economic crisis of the early 1930s
Article Abstract:
The causes of the 1930 Hsaya San rebellion in Burma are related to the British administration's tax policy and complicated bureaucracy. Some scholars say the British system was flexible, granting tax remissions to the rural population to lessen their tax burden, but others argue remission of the capitation tax and land revenue was rare.
