The social value of French for bilingual Haitian immigrants
Article Abstract:
The Haitian immigrant community in the US is large and although Haitian Creole is a language they all share, a percentage is also French-speaking. Haitian immigrants arrive with the idea that knowing French connotes membership in a higher social class. They use French in anticipation of occupying a higher rung of the American social ladder. Thus, French has for them not just a communicative purpose but also an instrumental one. Evidence suggests that bilingual Haitian immigrants would consider membership in the American francophone community to be an improvement of status.
