The yearning for "friendship": Revisiting "the political" in minority revolutionary history in China
Article Abstract:
Revolutionary histories on the Northern frontier of China are studied, relating such histories to minority nationality, the legitimacy of Inner Mongolia as an 'autonomous region' and the structural transformation and hypernationalism in China. A nation-centered reappraisal of the 'friendship' between the Mongol Communist revolutionary Ulanhu and the Chinese warlord Fu Zuoyi in anti-Japanese resistance suggests China's attempt to domesticate Inner Mongolia for a national, post-revolutionary self-gain.
