"This is why we hunt": Social-psychological meanings of the traditions and rituals of deer camp

Article Abstract:

Deer campaigning is characterized by America's abundance, pioneer heritage, patriarchal family, and a good amount of meat-eating, followed by the festive family feast, buoyed by ample commercial and social encouragement. One notable distinction is the "high-context" communication of deer camp, in which participants have close connections over many years and many aspects of cultural behavior are unstated because members know what to do.
