Toward a theory of adolescent cruising: echoes from 1983

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on the social and psychological factors behind cruising, in which teenagers drive a particular segment of road repeatedly for show. Topics include imitation of adult behavior, desire for personal autonomy, aspects of tradition versus aspects of delinquency, and definitions of normalcy.

This article examines the urban space and design of the Appalachian Region. The author analyzes the arrangement of housing, the way in which people conduct their daily lives, and the aesthetic surrounding it all in an attempt to understand the nature of place and order.
