What Year was Great-Grandma Born?
Article Abstract:
The genealogist must take care in calculating someone's date of birth from a Canadian census record because the questions asked varied from census to census. For the 1851 census (enumeration date 12 January 1852), the enumerator asked how old the person would be on his or her next birthday. In 1871, on the other hand, the enumerator asked how old this person was on census day. It is important to read original census records to determine exactly what was asked concerning a person's age.
