A jab in the dark

Article Abstract:

The vast majority of British parents have traditionally accepted that it is wise to ensure that their children are vaccinated against diseases such as mumps, measles and whooping cough. However, this is no longer the case. In particular, there is growing concern about the new pre-school booster for mumps, measles and rubella. Under the new regime, children are vaccinated against these diseases at around 15 months and again at the age of four. This goes against earlier government information that one vaccination offered protection for life, and is prompting parents to question the effectiveness of other vaccinations too.

I was a man for a day

Article Abstract:

A journalist pretended to be a man as part of the Trading Places charity initiative to raise money for breast cancer research on March 27, 1992. The five o'clock shadow make-up and manner of walking completed the transformation. She was not looked directly in the face. Gentleman's clubs were sincerely welcoming and had the only decent toilet facilities. In a pub a path cleared to the bar as if by magic, whereas a woman would have been ignored.
