A long lifetime's journey toward an unknown region

Article Abstract:

Composer Ralph Vaughan Williams remained uncertain about his abilities for many years. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, and at the Royal College of Music, but also felt it necessary to take instruction from Max Bruch and Ravel. He became highly experienced in the art of composing, but still substantially revised his work and even withdrew some of it. The main significance of Vaughan Williams' music lies in its constant interplay of awe and doubt. He generally wrote best on a large scale, in contrast with the general trend among technically limited composers to remain miniaturists.

An aural dreamscape

Article Abstract:

Composer Gyorgy Ligeti's works were initially greeted with confusion and incomprehension. However, his music has been featured heavily at new music festivals since the 1950s, and even his most radical works are establishing a presence in the standard repertoire. His unique gift for imaginative hearing allowed him to develop a completely new technique and aesthetic, and he has been able to combine musical innovation with aspects of music from the past. He is aware that the composer must constantly combine skill and wit to impose order on a chaotic modern world.
