A nation both richer and more insecure

Article Abstract:

Household disposable income in the UK has increased by more than a third over the last three decades, according to the 1995 edition of 'Social Trends.' More than 70% of households now own a television, video recorder, washing machine and fridge freezer, and almost half of all children have a television set in their bedroom. Educational standards have improved, with more than half of all children under the age of five now benefiting from early education and class sizes falling. People enjoy a very wide range of leisure activities, and holidays are becoming more frequent.

Warning signals in life of a killer

Article Abstract:

Andrew Robinson, a paranoid schizophrenic who murdered occupational therapist Georgina Robinson in 1993, first showed signs of mental illness in his last year at school. By 1986, he was becoming increasingly obsessed with a woman who he believed was controlling him with occult powers, and soon after this became one of the first patients at the Edith Morgan Centre, where the murder took place. He entered a cycle of hospital admissions and discharges, and his parents were aware for some time that he may commit such an act.

Article Abstract:

Claims by the Sunday Times that senior Labour Party members were involved with the Soviet Union have been discredited by defector Oleg Gordievsky. The Sunday Times reported that according to archive material released by the present Russian government, Kinnock was closely connected to the Kremlin. Oleg Gordievsky who was at the KGB residency in London before defecting in 1985, claimed that the material was just ordinary embassy memoranda and that the behaviour of Labour politicians was impeccable.
