A personal alternative to headstones-by-numbers

Article Abstract:

Restrictions on graveyard memorials are beginning to be eased and the organisation Memorials by Artists can provide clients with personalised and individual memorials instead of the usual off-the-peg gravestones that all look the same and are of very low standard. This organisation was set up by Harriet Frazer after she had great difficulty in obtaining a suitable memorial for her stepdaughter, and there are now over 100 stonemasons on her list. If the demand spreads it may return modern cemeteries to the inspiring and interesting places that they ceased to be after the 1930's.

Wrong time, wrong place

Article Abstract:

The recent murder of 13-year-old Billie-Jo Jenkins has focused attention on the seaside town of Hastings, England, where she lived. This town has poor road links, giving it a sense of isolation, and seems to lack a distinct centre. Many of its old buildings are run-down and neglected, and there are very high levels of petty crime. The town has a higher than average suicide rate, and there are clear signs of economic problems. Efforts are being made to attract shoppers and visitors, however, and the town is trying to smarten up its image.
