A strike at the heart of Nirvana

Article Abstract:

A strike at United Parcel Service (UPS) has involved around 190,000 workers and has been seen as an aberration. Some analysts argue that it is heralds a change in attitudes as workers become increasingly resentful of low wage rises at a time when companies are making record profits. US wages could rise if labor becomes difficult to obtain, and productivity and reliability could be affected by resentment among workers. US productivity has not risen as much as productivity in Europe. Unemployment could rise if downsizing takes off again and this could affect the success of welfare reforms.

Clinton takes his own raincheck

Article Abstract:

There are indications that the administration headed by President Bill Clinton is now attaching considerable importance to global warming. This is a response to growing international pressure on the US to make a commitment to specific reductions in carbon emissions at an international conference to be held in Kyoto, Japan, in Dec 1997. Clinton has indicated that he will stand by a commitment to accept mandatory targets for cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases. However, he is facing strong opposition on this issue.

Mitterand's spirit takes a bow as France tunes up for grand finale

Article Abstract:

A number of steps are being taken in France to mark the first anniversary of the death of former president Francois Mitterrand. A private inauguration ceremony has already taken place for his political foundation, and there will shortly be a two-day memorial conference at Unesco on issues of international development. A special stamp has been issued, and a street will be named after him in Jarnac, France, where he was born and is buried.
