A very close community
Article Abstract:
The 100 million pounds sterling social housing development currently underway in the London borough of Hackney has been hailed by prime minister John Major has a welcome replacement for 1960s tower blocks. The houses and flats are built along traditional lines, streets are designed to be safe and many trees are being planted. Local labour is being used, and the development includes a community hall. Most of the people who have already moved into the new homes are pleased with them, but point out that they are very small.

Doctors who pay the piper call the tune
Article Abstract:
National Health Service (NHS) reforms have made it possible for many GP practices to offer a much wider range of services to patients. Having control over a single budget allows money to be allocated to the areas where it is needed most and more investment to be made in health promotion. Traditional barriers between areas of the caring services can be broken down, but practices remain accountable to local people. The only real area of concern is that managing a budget places GPS under additional strain.

Rediscovering the missing underclass
Article Abstract:
The UK government's current classifications of social class are based on occupation, but this is now being seen as an unrepresentative approach, excluding around 40% of the population. Groups such as the unemployed and the retired, which are some of the most disadvantaged in society, are not accounted for under the present system of classification. The social class definitions must now be changed to account for new social trends.
