A washing machine on life-saver cycle

Article Abstract:

Llandough Hospital, Cardiff is one of three UK hospitals involved in a three-year clinical trial of LDL Apheresis, a cholesterol-filtering treatment set up by Dr Gilbert Thompson of Hammersmith Hospital, London. The painless treatment involves connecting the patient to a machine which separates blood cells from plasma and removes low-density lipids from the blood. Sufferers from familial hypercholesterolaemia will benefit from this and it could obviate heart surgery. Professor Desmond Julian, Medical director of the British Heart Foundation is expecting the results to show whether the treatment reduces the lesions in coronary arteries or removes them completely.

The African fish man of Saughton Prison

Article Abstract:

Alex Torbet, 54, is serving a life sentence in Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, where he has become an international expert in fish breeding. Stirling University's Institute of Aquaculture set up research facilities in the prison in the 1970's to study the tilapia's breeding habits. The tilapia, which has a high protein content, can survive in difficult conditions and may relieve Third World hunger problems. The research has enabled Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh to develop tilapia farming.

Rebellion in the non-commissioned ranks

Article Abstract:

It is difficult for Army wives to obtain work or have a career as they have to move often. Since the Army no longer offers guaranteed job security, a personal income base for wives is sensible. When the Army does offer work opportunities suitable for wives, they are either underpaid or discriminated against. Four-year postings would be better for working wives, but they worry about damaging their husbands' career prospects.
