Access, excellence and education are the Art Council's challenges

Article Abstract:

The Arts Council of England's role is to support artists and the arts, as well as to foster the relationship between ordinary people and the arts. It recognizes that attention must focus on audiences, as these are vital to the success of the arts. Particular attention must be given to audiences who need encouragement to become involved with art for the first time. This is why the Arts Council has established the New Audiences programme, which investigates novel ways of fostering access to arts activities.

By the people, for the people

Article Abstract:

The Arts Council has been very successful during the last five decades in ensuring that cultural life in the UK has flourished. However, arts funding is still the subject of considerable controversy, particularly the issue of public subsidy. Some observers now believe that the arts funding system should have been given a wider brief and that the example of other European countries, where culture is seen as an integral part of the welfare state, should be followed.

Air on a shoestring

Article Abstract:

A number of the UK's self-governing orchestras are now finding it hard to accept that very strong leadership is necessary if they are to be truly successful. At the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), this has led recently to Paul Findlay being dismissed as managing director. It is now clear that running an orchestra is a very difficult and insecure task, and some observers fear that the UK could soon see the complete closure of one of its symphony orchestras.
