Adding up the European way
Article Abstract:
The Gatsby Primary Mathematics Project, established by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Barking and Dagenham Council, aims to boost standards of mathematics among nine and 10-year-olds. It draws on some of the characteristics of mathematics teaching in Germany and Switzerland, where standards have been found to be considerably higher. It focuses on mental arithmetic, which is seen as a basis for more complex number work.

Choice spells homework for parents
Article Abstract:
The 1980 Education Act allows parents to state which school they would prefer their child to attend, but there are still no guarantees that this preference will be met, so 'parental choice' does not really exist. Parents looking at various schools should ensure that they visit each one, and must not be deceived by a glossy brochure. The best schools are those where a lot of work is displayed, where parents are very involved and where the children seem happy, busy and purposeful.
