Impotent peace-keeping force bemuses Albanians; despite the mayhem, elections will go ahead
Article Abstract:
Many ordinary Albanians cannot understand exactly why there is a multinational peacekeeping force in the country. There is still widespread violence, and the peacekeeping force has done nothing to put a stop to it. The role of the peacekeeping force in the elections which are to take place on Jun 29, 1997, is also unclear. The force, which is made up of around 6,000 troops, cannot protect polling stations, and is likely to encounter logistical difficulties with protecting international election observers.

Albania enters the twilight zone
Article Abstract:
Albania is currently facing widespread public disorder, with strong opposition to the government of president Sali Berisha. The government has responded to the threat posed by armed gangs in cities in the south of the country by imposing martial law. It has taken firm action against domestic and foreign media, and has brought into force a strict curfew. Many people are now staying at home as much as possible as more uniformed and plainclothes police are put on the streets.
