Amalia Rodrigues
Article Abstract:
Singer Amalia Rodrigues became attracted to the fado, a popular song form which gained the status of national music in Portugal, as a teenager. She came to public attention after entering a competition to find the Queen of Fado in 1938. She began performing, and then starring, at the Retiro da Severa, a professional fado house. She began performing at the Cafe Luso in 1941, and performed in Madrid, Spain, in 1943. Her recording career began in 1944 during a season at the Copacabana Casino in Brazil.

Send away the clowns
Article Abstract:
The soundtrack for the Cirque du Soleil's latest show, entitled 'Saltimbanco,' is rather disappointing. The 12 tracks are designed to appeal to a very wide range of tastes, and are therefore very bland. The music lacks context, and sounds as if it dates from at least the mid-1980s. It reflects the fact that traditional circus music may eventually die out in certain regions, particularly the UK, where circuses no longer use traditional musical practices.

Do, do, do the funky baseball bat
Article Abstract:
The macarena is a new dance which was introduced when the English version of the recording of the Spanish group Los del Rio, entitled 'Macarena', was launched in autumn-1995. The programming assistant at Galaxy Radio, West of England dance station, Scott Cridland, resisted playing the record at first, finding it trite, but the record company continued delivering copies, and the radio station succumbed when the recording received television coverage.
