Now we must try to free the Iraqis from Saddam Hussein

Article Abstract:

Speculation that the US administration may turn its attentions to Iraq and try to remove Saddam Hussein from power is discussed. It is argued that almost all sanctions against Iraq should be removed, with Iraq being permitted to use its oil revenues. In return, Iraq would have to agree to the return of weapons inspectors.

An Oscar that reminds us of a cowardly, shameful little episode

Article Abstract:

The decision to give the 1999 Oscar lifetime achievement award to film director Elia Kazan has prompted reflection about Kazan's role in betraying communists in the 1950s. Kazan was strongly opposed to communists, and felt that, if he did not name them, they would soon be named by someone else. Nevertheless, he faced a very difficult position when placed under strong pressure by the House Un-American Activities Committee to name participants in a left-wing theatre group he ran in the mid-1930s who were members of the Communist party.

All-American Gothic: Columbine High: a suburban horror story

Article Abstract:

It is possible to identify a number of reasons why Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold may have been prompted to make their gun attack on students at Columbine High in Denver, CO. They may have watched many violent films, or could have been encouraged by fantasies of death and suicide contained in Internet pages. However, these factors do not explain why the attack took place in a wealthy suburban area, rather than in an inner city area where violence is common. The explanation possibly lies in the fact that there is considerable solidarity among students at inner city schools, whereas students at schools in wealthy areas are singled out and rejected if they do not conform to clear stereotypes.
