An end to genocide for our ape cousins
Article Abstract:
The UK government has made a very significant step in banning research on great apes. This is the first time that any government has recognized that animals have a value in themselves, and that they should not merely be at the disposal of humans. It is clear that great apes have a strong social structure, are highly intelligent and are capable of feeling a range of emotions. These characteristics are sufficient justification for granting them the status of persons and therefore giving them special protection.

A sombre reminder of the mechanics of genocide
Article Abstract:
The Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, is a disturbing building, recreating the atmosphere of gas chambers and Nazi headquarters. Its architect James Ingo Freed, a refugee from Nazi Germany, is a partner with I M Pei. He based his design on mausoleums, crematoria, factories and prisons. The roof has turreted watchtowers. The central atrium, the Hall of Witness, has steel crossbars on the walls. The building creates an atmosphere of oppression, foreboding, evil and terror.

Silence from the spin doctor whose e-mail wrecked the sombre mood of national unity
Article Abstract:
Jo Moore, special adviser to UK Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions Stephen Byers, is facing accusations of damaging the mood of national unity following the terrorist attacks on the US. Shortly after the attacks, she sent an e-mail suggesting that it would be a good day on which to release news that the Labour party wished to bury.
