And now for a word from our composer...
Article Abstract:
There have been very mixed views among 20th century composers about whether they should explain the meanings behind their music or simply allow the music to speak for itself. Brahms, for example, hardly spoke about his music at all in public, but in fact gave considerable attention in private to the aesthetics and techniques of music. In contrast, composers such as Wagner, Schumann and Berlioz published extensively. Most recently, Alexander Goehr has published a book entitled 'Finding the Key, Selected Writings of Alexander Goehr.'

Composer's odyssey
Article Abstract:
Hungarian-Jewish composer Gyorgy Ligeti was born on May 28, 1923, in Transylvania and evaded Auschwitz, unlike his family. He grew up under Stalin when radical music was forbidden. He determined to hear the first broadcast of Stockhausen's 'Gesang der Junglinge' and collapsed in the Cologne home of Karlheinz Stockhausen in Feb 1957. His compositions evolved and Ligeti introduced maverick theatricality with amusing insertions. His music has a vagueness since his heart problems in 1978.

'A high note, a low note, a note in the middle - like the music of a madman.' (reputation of composer Anton Webern)
Article Abstract:
The reputation of composer Anton Webern has changed considerably over recent decades. There have been few attempts to mark the 50th anniversary of his death, but the intricacies of his music continue to fascinate experts. Performers and audiences find his extraordinary combination of extreme concision of outer form and great density of internal relationships very hard to cope with, but they accept that there are still many creative possibilities in his work.
