Anglo-French spat masks wider policy harmony

Article Abstract:

It has become clear that, on international matters, France and Britain are increasingly in close agreement, and France and Germany are moving apart. UK Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd recently commented that there is a better working relationship between the British and French than he has ever seen. The two countries have been in complete agreement over military intervention in the former Yugoslavia and have both contributed to United Nations ground forces. The fall in American activity in Europe and Germany's introspection makes joint UK French action on European defence policy the obvious course to be followed.

Palestinians tire of bending over backwards

Article Abstract:

A Middle East conference of about 30 countries is to be held in Moscow on Jan 29 92, and Palestine holds the key to whom will attend. Faisal al-Husseini, head of the Palestinian delegation, will not accept restrictions on his country's representation. If Israel refuses this, all Arab countries will withdraw from the multilateral meeting which will discuss arms control, refugees and water supply. Western countries want the conference to proceed, if only to establish Russia's new international involvement.

Sweden takes pride in its murdered PM

Article Abstract:

There were very mixed views among Swedish people about prime minister Olof Palme, who was assassinated in Feb 1986, when he was actually in office, but since his death he has come to be regarded generally positively. He personified Sweden's image as the world's conscience, and was always dramatic and controversial. His main legacy was regarding conservative politician Carl Bildt, rather than one of his party comrades, as his successor.
