Article Abstract:

Scientists are already aware of a number of key factors determining the activities of the human body clock. These include melatonin, the hormone secreted at night by the pineal gland, and the suprachiasmic nucleus, brain cells that act as a form of biological pacemaker. New research in this area has focused on a set of chemicals known as cryptochromes, which exist in both plants and animals. It appears that cryptochromes constantly adjust the body clock to the period of daylight, and also form part of the clock itself.

The final frontier of science

Article Abstract:

The Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, will permit scientists to look back in time to events that took place billions of years ago, the time required for the light to reach Earth. It is one of the first ground-based telescopes to correct the distortion created by the Earth's atmosphere with a complex system of 'adaptive optics.' It will be possible for future telescopes to witness the very act of creation, and astronomers expect to see the birth of stars and galaxies.

Natural selection from the top

Article Abstract:

The creation of Lake Guri as the result of a hydroelectric scheme in Venezuela led to many former hilltops becoming islands. Many of the original species disappeared from these islands. Within only four years, all the top predators had been lost. Removing the top-down pressure led to a population explosion of certain animals that benefited from the new structure of species in the ecosystem.
