As the Round Room goes, so does an era

Article Abstract:

Many observers feel that the Round Reading Room of the British Museum in London, England, will lose much of its unique identity and atmosphere when it is re-incorporated into the British Museum itself as a result of the construction of a new British Library. Some of the fittings which are essential to its atmosphere are to be removed, and the room will be robbed of its bookishness. It will become a 'centre of information,' losing its role as a great place of writing and scholarship.

Desperate laughter

Article Abstract:

A number of prominent writers recently attended a conference on the state of laughter and comdey in the new era of seriousness and political correctness. Concern was expressed that comedy is now seen as improper and partial, especially if it focuses on minorities. However, this has not prevented many new comedians from emerging, and comic writers still fiercely defend their role. Comedy is in fact increasingly necessary in a world which seems to be falling apart.

Bring home a truly British film revolution

Article Abstract:

The UK film industry is undergoing a revival, having most recently been assisted by National Lottery funding. New confidence is emerging, and high quality films are being produced on the basis of experience gained in making good television drama. However, the UK still does not have a secure national film industry, and UK films are not guaranteed wide release. There is still the possibility of US filmmaking culture dominating in the UK.
