Backlash raises threat of new coup

Article Abstract:

Chilean senators who support former dictator General Augusto Pinochet have stated that they will boycott sessions of the country's Upper House until Pinochet, who has been arrested in the UK, is freed. This would make it impossible to pass important legislation. A political crisis is emerging in Chile as both supporters and opponents of Pinochet demonstrate on the streets. Military officers have begun criticizing Pinochet's detention and the fact that the Chilean government permitted him to travel to London, England, on a diplomatic passport.

Rivals rustle the Pope's Central American flock

Article Abstract:

There has been a strong shift towards Protestantism in Central America, traditionally an area dominated by the Roman Catholic Church, in recent years. Protestant churches are attracting many disillusioned Catholics, and Protestants are beginning to claim that Protestant churches could become more dominant than Catholicism by the end of the 21st century. This trend has been highlighted during the recent visit of the Pope to Central America, which has attracted opposition from Protestants.
