Backwards into the future
Article Abstract:
The members of rock group Mercury Rev are particularly interested in the processes of erosion and recollection that influence their impressions of many different musical forms, including jazz, blues, pop and rock. Many of the melodies on the group's fourth album, 'Deserter's Songs,' are derived from half-remembered impressions from their early childhood. This album varies considerably from the group's earlier work, which was characterized by a restless avant-garde approach.

For a few Bob more
Article Abstract:
Bob Dylan is still seen as one of the greatest rock and roll singers, but there is growing concern that he has not produced any new material for more than five years. It is widely accepted that he reinterprets his work in concert, but this strategy cannot be applied to recorded output. The only recordings which are now being issued are 'classic' compilations and stopgap releases.

Soundtrack albums: listen without prejudice
Article Abstract:
Soundtrack albums featuring songs from popular films have always been a successful format for the record industry, often remaining in the album charts for many weeks. Many films now used newly commissioned music, rather than existing very popular songs, which can be very expensive. There is even a trend towards secondary and tertiary soundtracks.
