Beloved of rogues and researchers
Article Abstract:
There is very strong interest among collectors in penny blacks, the first postage stamp in the world. It is possible to purchase a used penny black in reasonable condition for as little as 25 pounds sterling, but the rarest types can fetch extremely large sums. Serious collectors consult Charles Nissen's plating guide to penny blacks of 1922 to find out what their particular penny blacks are really worth. Stamps with inverted watermarks, guide lines in the corners and those whose cancellation has not obliterated Queen Victoria's head are particularly sought after.

It's old and grey but some people still love it
Article Abstract:
It is becoming very hard to find pieces of genuine antique pewter, as most of the large numbers of pewter pieces made in the three centuries to 1800 were later purchased by tin refiners and turned into other items. However, prices for antique pewter are still relatively low, as there are few collectors. For those looking to invest in pewter, it is best to focus on Art Nouveau pieces. These items have increased by between 200% and 300% in value since the late 1980s.

Private collector seeks like-minded people
Article Abstract:
Publisher of the 'Hoole's Guide to British Collecting Clubs' Mr Les Hoole found some clubs unwilling to enter details for publication. The clubs' addresses are listed but names and telephone numbers are not. The 110 clubs have about 250,000 members between them. There are many specialist stamp clubs and clubs for collectors of mugs, map postcards and silhouettes. Many clubs offer excellent newsletters which study and catalogue items not written about elsewhere.
