There has been a significant decline in the UK in gilt rates, the basis on which pension annuities are calculated. There are a number of different types of annuity, including a level annuity and a joint life, last survivor annuity. Even if there is a further fall in annuities, purchasing one at a later age will at least partially balance this out. Phased retirement will probably be the best option for those who already have enough income from other savings or from still working.
