Beyond Whitehall's grasp

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative government has reduced local authority power since 1979. About 50% of local government income is collected by central government. This has resulted in local government finance capping. The main purpose of local authorities is to provide a non-political service. The UK needs to adopt the European Charter on local self-government. This would allow local government to sue government for infringement of liberties and powers. Increased local government independence would necessitiate accountability which could be satisfied by annual council elections.

Why I won't let Major in

Article Abstract:

The Conservative government is coming to the end of its useful life, giving the appearance of being drained of any positive policies. It is divided and demoralised, and has no hope of a revival. Recent local election results have highlighted ordinary people's views on this issue. Many people have not bothered to vote at all, having become very cynical about politics, while those who have voted indicated a desire for change.

Little England has no future

Article Abstract:

The UK's Conservative government has become so split that it is unable to make any real decisions at all. There is a serious lack of strong leadership, especially on the issue of the UK's membership of the European Union. Prime minister John Major seems to have come under the influence of the Eurosceptics, ignoring the fact that the UK has no future outside the European Union.
