Big enough, rich enough, but...
Article Abstract:
Scotland is not the small, poor country that people imagine that it is, and could survive independence from England. Scotland is number 30 in world league figures for gross national product and number 23 for per capita income. Recently its economic growth has been slowing but it still has large oil and nuclear energy capabilities and a strong financial base. At the moment it does have good public finance from England, but a deal could be made for independence which could square up Scotland's oil revenue to its public spending needs.

Big, but not big enough
Article Abstract:
The recent move by Abbey National to purchase National and Provincial building society shows that even large building societies are seen as potential takeover targets. It is likely that all smaller building societies will have to agree to be taken over sooner or later, while the larger ones could decide to float independently, although there is still the risk of a subsequent takeover through a bid. Some observers now believe that the building society movement in its original form is coming to an end.

Scotland can pay its own way
Article Abstract:
Many different arguments have been put forward about how Scotland would be likely to develop economically if it were to gain independence from the rest of the UK. Scotland would not receive the large European Union transfers from which Ireland has benefited, but it is still possible to predict that Scotland's economy would see a modest improvement after independence, or at least remain stable. This is because small countries are no longer at an economic disadvantage compared with larger ones.
