Bill or Tony: which one will history remember?
Article Abstract:
A comparison of the influence of President Bill Clinton and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair must be based on their respective success in developing and promoting ideas that could have a global impact. Clinton does not seem to have been responsible for any ideas that have taken on international significance. It remains uncertain whether Blair will have any lasting international influence. However, it is possible that Blair's lasting legacy will be the idea that governments will redefine the border between what is appropriate for the public sector and what is appropriate for the private sector.

'Arrogant because we are good.' (history and prospects of the Bundesbank)
Article Abstract:
The Bundesbank, Frankfurt, Germany, is housed in a hospital-like building guarded by armed men. Its president Helmut Schlesinger worked his way up to his position unlike previous officers who were ex-Nazis. The Bundesbank, which was created in 1957, dominates European finance. The government settled the rate at which the Ostmark was converted into the mark against Bundesbank recommendations. If Europe decides on a single currency the Bundesbank may have to relinquish power.

Why speculators are good for society
Article Abstract:
Financial speculators such as George Soros, Sir James Goldsmith and Ross Perot attract mixed views. Ordinary people are fascinated by them, but they have doubts about how they use their money. They have become increasingly influential as national governments have lost power, but always seem to want to go further. Their main contribution is in their actions, rather than their opinions.
